This month we celebrate 20 years in business by celebrating the man who made it all possible…our teacher and mentor and the man who made swing dancing around the world popular during the 1980’s resurgence.
Frankie Manning was a leading dancer at Harlem’s legendary Savoy Ballroom where, in the mid-1930s, he revolutionized the course of the lindy hop with his innovations, including the lindy air step and synchronized ensemble lindy routine.
As a featured dancer and chief choreographer for the spectacular Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers, he performed in numerous films (including Hellzapoppin’), and entertained on stages around the world with jazz greats Ethel Waters, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Cab Calloway.
Frankie Manning was one of our teachers and we brought him to the Hudson Valley to teach a weekend workshop in 2006. It is one of Linda’s treasured memories to have been able to teach with him. He is known as “The Ambassador of Lindy Hop” and Linda edited his book of the same name (Temple University Press, 2007).
This very special workshop will focus on Frankie’s stories and steps. Learn about this amazing man with a presentation by his long-time partner, Judy Pritchett, followed by a Q & A and then learn some of Frankie’s favorite moves with Linda & Chester.
